Christopher Grange is an established and trusted provider of services for older people. They are regulated by the Care Quality Commission.
Their aim is to be the leading provider of residential, nursing and end of life care for the elderly in Merseyside and everything is driven by the needs, abilities, and aspirations of their residents. Christopher Grange is a Catholic Charity; however, their service is available to all, irrespective of their faith and beliefs.
Christopher Grange provide residential, nursing and end of life care for 106 residents (male and female) with varying abilities and for those who want to maintain their independence but now find that they need practical and personal care.
Christopher Grange believe that all their residents deserve quality service, and everything offered is amongst the highest levels of quality in the field. The priority is to ensure that everyone receives the appropriate care and support and to treat others with the dignity and respect we would wish for ourselves.
Christopher Grange had an urgent need to deploy a resilient and site wide Wi-Fi solution that would allow staff to work across the various wards and departments throughout the building. New work practices required the adoption of tablets for staff to use for patient care.
Staff needed to be able to conduct Teams or Zoom calls with care agencies, stakeholders, and other health services.
Equally important during the pandemic, residents and their families needed to be able to communicate using video calls or other social media platforms. A reliable Wi-Fi solution was essential.
Unfortunately, due to the age and sprawling nature of the building the attempts to provide wi-fi service had been done either to cover a local area or department, or the equipment used was old poorly configured and unable to cope with the demand.
A full audit of the site was carried out, not only to assess the full requirement to cover the site, but also to review the internal cabling of the building. Cost prevented a complete re-cabling of the site so a plan to run new CAT6 cables from the computer room to distributed switches around the site was developed. Using power over ethernet (POE) from the distributed switches meant that new access points could be installed with the minimum of cabling and disruption to the day to day working of the home.
Once the site had been mapped out ensure full coverage the installation could be completed.
One Wi-Fi network was configured to provide secure access for staff that allowed access to local network services and the internet. That meant that the essential mobile work could now be carried out around the building and centre staff could work where it was needed rather than trying to work where they could get a wi-fi signal.
A second guest network was created for visitors. This presented visitors or residents with a friendly and simple portal to access the internet. Although this connection allowed simple access for elderly residents, by utilising secure technology in the background it prevents abuse by unwanted or malicious connections.
The whole solution is managed from MRD’s Ubiquiti Cloud Controller, which allows all connections to be monitored, configured, and supported remotely. Alerts are raised for suspicious activity or if any of the Access Points requires attention.
Staff and residents alike are now able to take advantage of a host of services available via the internet. On-line meetings, video calls, streaming services, web browsing or simply collecting email can now be done throughout the estate.
Care staff can now take advantage of new services and technology helping them improve the quality of service provided.
